Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay grew up with her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by the arts. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and educated. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers they spent there to help in her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California.
