Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to be creative and inspired by art. Aunt Denise worked the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she was able to introduce her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to engage people. DuVernay was additionally taught by her mom who was a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and raised. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the famous civil rights protest over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time she was in Selma to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she obtained degrees in English as well as African American Studies. As a student DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism by the tasks that she was assigned, the journalist was inspired to start a new career in public relations. DuVernay got a job right after college, as an intern at an unassuming studio. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
